Kumon Japanese Language Program

Not being able to attend classes doesn’t prevent you from studying Japanese with Kumon. If, for example, the class times don’t fit your schedule, or you live far away from a Kumon center, don’t give up! You can study Japanese at your convenience with Kumon’s correspondence course using the same material as used in class.
In addition to the normal correspondence course material, we now provide one-to-one online reading lessons with your instructor, two times a month, at NO EXTRA CHARGE! Study Japanese at your convenience with our correspondence course, and in addition, be able to see and talk with your instructor online!

Student’s Comment !

Ms. Marillen Quiambao :
She started Kumon Japanese Language Program in the middle of June, 2010. She has just finished studying 6 textbooks which are from level 3A to D and she will finish the program after studying 5 more.

She gave birth to her first baby in the end of August and she resumed the program from September. She continues her reading lessons with her instructor at 3:00 pm every Thursday* . She mainly reads aloud a CD textbook around 30 minutes and receives feedback.

1. What do you think about Kumon method you’ve studied so far?

The worksheets are very helpful. They help the student memorize new words and remember new concepts. The CD and the weekly reading lessons complement each other.

2. What kind of your Japanese ability is developed with studying Kumon?

I developed my vocabulary and learned grammar rules and Japanese life/customs. Through the reading lessons, my writing, listening and conversation skills have been improving.

It is very helpful because a Japanese instructor listens when I read out the text and gives comments for improvement. Besides, it motivates me to be up to date with my answer sheets since I am expecting a call every week.

3. What do you think about reading lessons ?

It is very helpful as a native speaker listened when I read out the text and give comments for improvement. Aside from a native speaker checking my reading and pronunciation, it motivates me to be up to date with my answer sheets since I am expecting a call every week.

4. How do you find time and continue to study Japanese everyday by yourself?

I study during my free time which in my case is very irregular because of household chores and my baby. I have once woke up at 3 am to do the worksheets (while the baby is asleep and there was no chores to be done).

I was tempted to stop my studies many times after I gave birth. However I realize if I had stopped, I would not have been able to learn at all. I tried studying on my own, but I failed. it's difficult to be consistent when no one is checking on you (specially when you are busy with something) and no one answers your questions and guides you.

5. Please tell us your goal in the future.

I don’t like the feeling of not knowing fully what’s happening around me, and I want to be free from the need for translator.

I want to be proficient in daily conversation and my target is to pass level N1 of the JLPT, if possible. I know it will take time to attain my goal, but I will do my best.

It's nice to learn a second language. Since I knew a few Japanese words when I was in the Philippines, I figured Japanese was a practical choice.

* The date and time of each lesson is arranged between you and your instructor.

Why is oral-reading important?
Oral reading is one of the most effective ways of learning a language and as such Kumon emphasizes this in the Japanese program. Reading aloud helps you master the vocabulary and expressions you have studied, giving you the confidence to use them in daily life. Kumon’s Online Reading Lessons gives you face-to-face reading sessions with your instructor, just as if you were in class!
